Physiotherapy vs chiropractic — which one is right for you?
28 May 2026 · Prestons Injury Therapy
If you've got back, neck or joint pain, you've probably wondered whether to see a physiotherapist or a chiropractor. Both are excellent at relieving pain and restoring movement — they just approach it from slightly different angles.
What physiotherapists focus on
Physiotherapy is centred on movement and function. A physio assesses how your body moves, identifies what's driving your pain, and uses a mix of hands-on manual therapy, exercise prescription, dry needling and education to fix it. The goal is not just to feel better today, but to build strength and resilience so the problem doesn't keep coming back.
Physio tends to be the go-to for:
- Sports injuries and rehabilitation
- Post-surgical and post-fracture recovery
- WorkCover and NDIS injuries
- Long-term strengthening and prevention
What chiropractors focus on
Chiropractic centres on the spine, joints and nervous system. Chiropractors diagnose and treat mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, often using spinal adjustments alongside soft-tissue work to restore alignment and reduce nerve irritation.
Chiropractic is often a great fit for:
- Back and neck pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Postural problems
- Sciatica and nerve-related pain
So which should you choose?
Here's the honest answer: there's a lot of overlap, and the "right" choice often depends on your specific problem and what you respond to best. A stiff, locked-up lower back might respond beautifully to an adjustment; a recurring hamstring strain needs loading and rehab.
The good news at Prestons Injury Therapy is that you don't have to choose alone. Because our physiotherapists, chiropractors and massage therapists work under one roof, we can assess you properly and point you toward — or combine — the approach that will get you the best result. Many of our patients benefit from a blend of both.
